A splitting of paths

Hell(o) folks! I know what you're thinking, it's been a while since I last checked in here. I feel really bad, eh? Plenty of other things have been going on so this site has fallen foul of the hierarchy of life (or something). I'm sooooooo sorry. Friends again?

Anyway, some fairly interesting celluloid collaborations are on the horizon and after some serious heel dragging by myself, some physical releases are on their way. I'll also be posting a few more preview tracks etc. over the coming months. More news on these mildly exciting titbits soon.

Whilst I've got your eyes, gonnae check out my newly created "other" or mistress blog featuring randomly selected tracks from my electronic music library mashed together into no-thought-involved mixtapes. No filtering or careful selections, just haphazard bingo-esque compilations. The output is likely to swing between being interesting and a complete disaster, so check it out. I'm going to use this blog as dumping ground for all the other random music cludge I've been mushing up this place with, so from now on this page will be Repeated Viewing/Horror guff focused. Please take the chance to abandon the ship will you can folks...

More soooooooooon!

Another Rusty Nail in the Coffin of Independent Record Shops...

So the demise of HMV has been grabbing the headlines of late but yesterday saw the last day of trading for one of Scotland's longest running and best record stores. One Up records in Aberdeen provided me with a frankly amazing source of underground/alternative music as I was growing up in the grimmmm North East of Scotland. In the mid ninties I landed a job there after an interview that consisted of 4 pints in the local and a drunken quiz regarding my knowledge of Dischord's back catalog. To my horror I was sent to work in the vinyl basement where all the (gulp) DANCE MUSIC WAS!!! Actually turned out to be a pretty defining moment in developing my musical tastes beyond raging hardcore and metal. Great store, knowledgeable staff, magic memories. Truly a sad day for Aberdeen's already weary alternative cultural scene. Ironically, the council whose high rent demands had been a significant part of helping to crush the life out of the business for years is apparently planning to open their hub for Aberdeen's city of culture bid there. Go figure.

Arrathebest to Raymond, Fred and Tich, troopers to the end.

Owl be darned!

Michael Soavi's Stage Fright (AKA Aquarius, Deliria) remains an under-appreciated classic of italian horror cinema. Hyper stylised 80's carnage at it's best with one of the weirdest killer outfits in the history of celluloid captured moi-dah. Needless to say, the soundtrack by Simon Boswell is a cracker and well worth taking the time to track down.

The full movie is on yoooootube but unfortunately unless you know your rigatoni from your spaghetti hoops you'll find it a rather perplexing viewing experience. So why not have a wee swatch at the trailer instead?

The title says it all

Here's a rather amusing little number I was lucky enough to see at one of Strange Vice's movie nights in Glasgow. An unofficial follow up to Anthropophagus's baby munching madness, Absurd is an all out maniac on the loose movie with big George Eastman mashing up everyone in sight. Dumb cops, preposterous medical explanations and a particularly drawn out sequence involving a human oven chip make this a winner. Magic pummelling soundtrack as well, of course.
